09/08/2016 ZJ241 Griffin HT1 202(R) Sqn During a sortie from RAF Valley the helicopter touched down on Yr Aran, a mountain peak south of Snowdon, Gwynedd, in North West Wales to pick someone up as part of an exercise. Immediately severe vibrations were encountered followed soon after by thick smoke in the cockpit. All five occupants exited the helicopter safely. The gearbox support case supports had fractured thus allowing the gearbox to move forwards to such an extent that the main drive shaft coupling failed. Fuel pipes in the vicinity were damaged by debris which ignited. The subsequent fire soon became uncontrollable and the helicopter was soon engulfed
